Global Skills for Global  Professions- the example of the teaching profession

Globalisation poses many challenges for any profession including teaching. There is a need for new skills to be developed related to the complex nature of the societies and economies we are all now living in. Professor Bourn has recently published a major new book on Understanding Global Skills for 21st Century Professions, published by Palgrave, and his keynote will make reference to this publication with specific reference to the skills needed to be a ‘global teacher’. It will suggest that teachers need not only to have inter-cultural skills but also to be able to adapt to the forces of globalisation on the nature and forms of learning and be equipped to prepare young people for living and working in a global economy.
Whilst there has been an expansion of literature on 21st Century skills for teachers, Professor Bourn will suggest that much of this material does not address the dynamics of globalisation and the power relations that go with the impact of global forces.
The presentation will also make reference to the connections between these skills needs and the role of teachers as change agents in the world, to be active participants in working towards a more just and sustainable world.
Within the presentation, Professor Bourn will refer to examples from the Global Learning Programme UK and the work of the Asia Society in the United States. He will further suggest that there is an urgent need for global skills to be an integral component of both the initial and in-service training of teachers.
